In lieu of donating meals, we provide the following as a way for students and dining to address food insecurity. We are also in process of becoming a SNAP retailer allowing us to accept those resources.
At the University of Illinois, we used to donate food through a program called Zero Percent (http://zeropercent.us/) which is part of the Feeding America network but it is now defunct and we now use Waste No Food. Food is posted online and local agencies opt to pick up the items, the food is deep chilled or frozen and instructions are given to the agency representative who picks up the items, the representative is also presented with a hold harmless agreement to sign which accompanies the holding and re-heating instructions. We also support Illini Fighting Hunger (http://illinifightinghunger.org/) where shelf stable meals are assembled and then made available at the on campus and other local food pantries. There is a new program that just started called Program 4 Less which is where wholesome leftover food is packaged in individual portions and made available at local food pantries, this was started as an alternative to the Campus Kitchen Program by the UNIFY RSO on campus.
There are emergency resources (money, food, etc.) available to any student in crisis through the emergency dean. We have three (3) food pantries that are operated by non-profit organizations and these locations are in the campus town area making them easy to access for students. The Wesley Food Pantry has specific hours for University Students. We are currently in discussion about a campus kitchen project, which would be operated by an RSO.
Feeding America has Map the Meal Gap which is a map of the US with the amount (%) of food insecurity (insecure) in the area, the information is granular down to each county. Dr. Gunderson is the national expert and he is a member of our faculty. http://map.feedingamerica.org/county/2014/overall
President Killeen has committed the University of Illinois to be part of the Presidents United to Solve Hunger (PUSH) campaign. The purpose of the campaign is to provide university presidents and students the resources they need to help commit their universities to a food-and-nutrition-secure world. Campuses and other organizations are discovering how prevalent food insecurity is, individuals who experience food insecurity are often silent. Campuses in particular have discovered the need to address the issue of food insecurity. It is difficult for a student to learn when they are hungry. This email is a follow up to previous conversations in smaller groups, you have been part of a previous conversation or were recommended to participate in the conversation. The purpose is to schedule a conversation about resources available and communication of those resources to our campus community.

Rhode Island School of Design program is Swipe it Forward, it is a temporary assistance program, empowering Campus Partners to provide meal assistance to students in need. It is a
collaborative program, allowing students to donate one of their guest meals per semester to a bank of meals. The donating student requests to donate a guest meal, the cashier taps a donation button on the register, and the meal is moved from the donating student's account into the meal match bank. Campus Partners such as Residential Life, Counselling Services, Financial Aid, Public Safety, the Dean's Office and Health Services request via a google form that meals be provided for a student in need. Dining Services moves the requested number of donated meals into the account of the student to receive the meal.

At Long Beach State we have a meal donation program known as Feed a Need. Residents donate a meal to a distribution bank administered by the AVP of Student Affairs and our ID Card Services Office. The donated meals provide short term support to students experiencing food insecurity. We raise approximately 1,200 to 1,500 meals per semester which includes a 300 meal match from our Residential Dining Services. There are some rules to the program:
- We limit the student donation to a single meal per semester per student to avoid dumping of all missed meals. Meal dumping would change the dining economics and lead to meal plan price increases over time.
- Students in need are usually limited to 10 meals with the idea that Student Affairs will work with them to find a long term resolution.
- The donated meals lapse each semester. This requires students to raise meals with a new Feed A Need campaign every fall and spring, establishing a practice of donating to our university.
- Meals are added to the ID accounts of receiving students in the same manner as regular meal plans. Thus, students in need are indistinguishable from anyone else and do not have to complete any documentation to dine in one of our residential facilities.
