    Hey NACAS,

We are reviewing different types of bookstore models and I am interested in anyone who currently has split contractors for their bookstore-- one for textbook solutions, and one for GM/other. Please contact me directly if you have this model and are willing to provide some feedback.

We switched from a contract on campus bookstore 2 years ago to a Hybrid model.  We currently have a campus store instead of a bookstore and we only sell books online through a Bookstore Company I found at a NACAS Conference.  I made a presentation on the switch at a conference this year  and I have a file I would be happy to share if you wanted to contact me in person.

I would be interested in this information.  We operate our own bookstore and Gm but always looking at options.

    HI Ryan,
The initial plan for CTX was for Sodexo to run the GM and subcontract another company (BBA) to operate the virtual model, but we had a single contract so we would have a single point of contact to manage the Campus Store.  After we entered the agreement, it worked better for BBA to run everything, but our contract is still with Sodexo.  It may be worth looking at having a single vendor who offers a subcontractor to offer the virtual model.  It simplifies management and consodidates billing. commissions, etc.

    Thanks,

    Hi all,

There's been some terrific conversation on this thread in response to Ryan's question - Thank you all for providing your insights and input! NACAS is currently working on a webinar presentation that will provide even more information around the area and two related bookstore presentations have just been uploaded to the Resource Library. "Bookstore Hybrid Operating Models Q/A" contains insights to the hybrid operating model that Carleton University's bookstore utilizes, and "College Store Operating Models Overview" details additional data around Hybrids at Sonoma State University.

As always, if you're having difficult accessing these resources, please don't hesitate to let me know!

    Hi All,
Don't overlook that you can HYBRID yourself.  A lot of colleges have moved textbooks into the stockroom and just created a small Online Fulfillment Store in their own stockroom or a warehouse on the edge of or off-campus. You also open up your store for more logo/gifts/apparel and higher margin merchandise.  Your eCommerce store site can simply provide that access. The big lease operators are already doing this in many of their college store locations.  Really, with the way course materials are headed it is only getting easier to do fulfillment online. ie: Cengage Unlimited.  As publishers push course materials toward greater digital-use platforms, there will be fewer and fewer books and space required to house them.  What's nice too is you can still provide that face to face in-store service for any Faculty/Student questions or concerns.  Most Inclusive Access programs can also be rolled into that internal operation. In our particular situation when a student orders certain course code accesses, our POS and eCommerce vendor emails it to them within 5 minutes.  Good luck.
