    Hello All,

I wanted to reach out find out how other campuses feed their students during orientation/welcome back?

Do they start their meal plan prior to move-in day?

Does Student Affairs or host department sponsor meals, etc?

Any information that you can report back would be helpful.

    Hi Sherron.
We start meals plans on the first day of welcome week in limited facilities and then expand as more students move onto campus.
The first 2 days are really focused on first year students, and there are lots of scheduled/programmed activities.
The rest of the meal plan process opens on day 3 of welcome week as we open up for basically everyone.

Housing and Orientation share much of the cost and our food service partner also assists with the process - both operationally and financially.
Let me know if you want more specifics and I can share some additional info off line.

Needless to say - at a big place like ours, if it wasn't in the contract, I'm not sure we'd get quiet as much support, but it does work out well.
We also have an orientation fee which helps cover some of it.

    Hope that helps.

    Hi Sherron,
Here at Nazareth College in Rochester, NY, we have the Orientation/Welcome Back lunch on the day of move in.  Our new and transfer students move in on the Thursday prior to classes starting and participate in Orientation through the Sunday prior to classes.  All new students, their families and faculty/staff participate in the lunch.  Student Activities hosts the lunch as they oversee Orientation.  The lunch is located in two places on campus to accommodate the crowds (Student Union and Dining Commons).  In addition, we have a grab and go option.  Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Hello Sherron,

At UMD in Duluth, MN our meal plan begins for all students with breakfast the morning after move-in day. On move-in day our Dining Services and Res Life co-sponsor a free outdoor cookout walk-up lunch that serves approximately 4,300 people. For dinner on move-in day our Welcome Week program (via their orientation fee) pays for a big catered meal at our football stadium for all incoming students and their families - approximately 4,000 people. Also, our Welcome Week program gets charged directly for meals that their orientation student staff eat (those who are not on a meal plan). That is approximately 140 students/meal for Friday-Sunday, also funded from the orientation fee.

    Couple notes for context:
    • we are a self-op dining program
    • student population is 11,000; 9,500 full-time undergrads
    • move-in day is a Thursday, classes begin on Monday
    • approximately 3,000 students are on some sort of meal plan
    • approximately 2,000 incoming students are on the full (all meals) plan
    • most of the 1,000 upper-class students move in on Saturday/Sunday
Great question, I'll be interested to see how others respond.  If you'd like additional details please feel free to contact me directly. -Corbin
